Sydney Harbour Hotel
Harbour Rocks Hotel Sydney, situated in the heart of the Rocks precinct, is a boutique property filled with history, character and charm.
Historic Charm
In 1788, European settlers claimed the land and built their camp on the sandstone cliffs we know as “The Rocks”, eventually growing from an open-air gaol into a vibrant port community.
It’s colourful history filled with tales of sailors, gangs and early settlers can still be traced in the many surviving buildings from the last two centuries, one of which is the Harbour Rocks Hotel. But today the renovated warehouses, sailors' home, and dens of iniquity house a unique mixure of fine dining restaurants, boutique shops and art galleries showcasing both established and new talent.
In days gone by, the hotels three storey brick warehouse may have been tainted with the dishonourable, undiscussed and illicit elements of society whilst in 1909 the building was tenanted in portions by customs agents, importers, chemists and wine merchants. One half of the building, known as "Scarletts’ Cottages" was built as six terrace sandstone houses, and still stands today.
There are more than 100 heritage sites and buildings in The Rocks and the oldest house is Cadmans Cottage, built during this era in 1817. The Dawes Point Battery is the oldest remaining structure, built in 1791. In 1802 there was one woman to four men and this ratio persevered for the next 40 years. While convicts lived in separate camps in tents or shacks dotted around the early settlement, eventually a gaol was built on George Street.
Adding to the romantic mystery of this historic site are the tales of the resident ghost named "Eric" who continues to search for his long lost love Scarlett. Whether Eric has ever found Scarlett, is yet to be determined!
